Egg mask for your hair

As you had seen on my Facebook page or Instagram, I washed my hair with an egg mask last week. My colleague Vera tipped me about this recipe and it was a great success! Therefore I would like to share the recipe of this egg mask with you. (Seems like I’m writing a recipe for a cookbook, right?) I call egg washing an egg mask, because egg washing is a cleaning method, but also a way to nourish your hair! You should also leave the egg in your hair for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Egg is very good for your hair because it is full of proteins. These proteins ensure that your hair will shine and become soft and strong. In addition, the egg works also as an emulsifier. This means that it is able to clean your hair in a light way because it liquefies the sebum in your hair. This makes it easy to rinse the sebum away with water. Even if you suffer from dandruff or a dry scalp, an egg mask is definitely recommended! Egg yolks contain sulfur, which helps prevent and fight dandruff. You do not always have to use the whole egg for washing with egg. Read more about this on my other No-poo & Low-poo blog.

The egg mask I washed my hair with last week consisted of the following ingredients:

  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (you can use fresh lemon juice or lemon juice that you can buy from the store)

Due to the lemon juice, the smell of the egg was not so strong, the mixture smelled nice and fresh. The lemon juice also ensures that the hair cuticles close again and will also make your hair feel nice and soft. Instead of lemon juice you can also add honey or a nice essential oil to the egg mixture.

Instructions

Mix the eggs with the lemon juice in a bowl and take it to your bathroom. Then go into your shower and wet your hair completely with lukewarm to cold water. Divide the egg mask over your entire hair and scalp. Then massage your scalp with your fingers en spread the egg through your hair. Put your hair up in a bun and go under the hot shower to do some other things (shave, exfoliate, wash) but make sure your hair does not get wet! (a shower cap can also help with this). After 5 to 10 minutes you can rinse the egg mask with lukewarm to cold water. If you rinse your hair with warm / hot water, the egg will solidify and you have a chance of boiled egg in your hair.

Tip; You can also do this above your bath, and just wait for a few minutes.

After my egg mask

After the egg mask my hair was super clean and soft. My hair had a lot of curls and felt nicely nourished. The smell of the egg was completely absent after my hair was dry!

Note: Egg contains a lot of protein, but these protein particals are to big to penitrate your hair and restore it from any damage. They will stay on and between the cuticles of your hair. This can create a funny (dry/brittle) feeling when your hair doesn’t need any protein. Especially when you have low porosity hair. The protein can then cause a build-up. More about the porosity of your hair and how to test it in my next blog.

  1. Giving the split end treatment a try!! I added about half a mushed banana to the mix also, potassium is supposed to be good for your hair. Wish me luck!!
